It is only normal for any person that will undergo surgery to know what the procedure is all about. There are so many people who are still clueless or even confused with LASIK eye surgery. LASIK is a form of eye surgery that is utilized in correcting astigmatism, myopia and hyperopia.

It is being performed by an eye doctor. In this case, an ophthalmologist who uses laser for the procedure. It's very comparable to other corrective surgical procedure such as photorefractive keratectomy. Its main advantage is that there is a faster recovery by the patient.

LASIK shouldn't be confused with LASEK. The main difference of the 2 types of laser eye surgery is that the former creates a flap and that the process of recovery is faster.

Simple LASIK eye surgery steps:

The patient's eyes are anesthetized ahead of the LASIK eye surgery procedure. Please keep in mind that no injections on the eye will take place. What will be used to numb the patient's eyes are eye drops only. Numbing is required since a flap will be created for the procedure. The laser eye surgery is being done of the outer part of the eye. This is what is usually referred as the cornea.

The actual laser procedure takes place in the deeper layer of the cornea. This is why the top portion of the cornea has to be lifted and placed on one side before any form of laser is applied. This actually leads to the creation of the flap which is being done with the use of laser or a surgical blade. Also, since the cornea is the one being treated, it is very important that the patient does not have any form of corneal disease or scarring.

A standard LASIK procedure uses a surgical blade. On the other hand, IntraLASIK makes us e of a laser to in creating the flap. This is the main reason why IntraLASIK is usually called a blade-less eye surgery procedure. This is also why it has become the most preferred LASIK method. The only downside of this method is that it is quite expensive.

When the flap is created (referring to the top layer) and pulled to one side, the application of the laser is applied to the innermost layer of the cornea. Most people would assume that the application of laser is painful since it utilizes heat. This is actually a wrong assumption. The application of the anesthesia definitely helped a lot in dissipating any form of pain or uncomfortable feeling.

On the average, it will only take around thirty seconds for the actual eye lasering. When the laser is being applied, it is already reshaping the surface of the eye. This is how the eye prescription in one's reading glasses are being eradicated. When the lasering of the eye is done, the flap will then replaced. This will let the eyes heal normally.

The LASIK eye surgery has surely helped a lot of people in improving their efficiency. Interested individuals for this kind of surgery must consult an eye surgeon first so that they will know if their eye conditions qualify them for this procedure. Once qualified, it is important to have proper expectations after the surgery.
